Man drowns after SUV goes into the water in West Knoxville

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - A man died Monday morning after an SUV plunged into a West Knoxville pond.

Tyler Wheatley, 23, of Knoxville was driving alone on Northshore Drive near Town Center Blvd.

According to a preliminary police report, Wheatley was driving a 1998 4Runner south on Northshore Drive when he went off the road on the right side.

Wheatley overcorrected, crossed both lanes, hit a guardrail on the left side of the road and flipped over the SUV onto its top.

When officers arrived on scene, divers were sent into the water to recover the victim's body.

He was taken out of the water and taken to University of Tennessee Medical Center.

Wheatley was wearing a seat belt.
