ATHENS (WATE) - McMinn County sheriff's deputies will be offering free rides home to New Year's Eve revelers who've had a few too many drinks to ring in the new year.
The sheriff's office is offering vans with two deputies to accompany party goers home, beginning at 8 p.m. and continuing through 4 a.m. Tuesday morning.
Residents will not be allowed to bring alcohol, weapons or other illicit items in the vehicle and can only be dropped off at a home or hotel room within McMinn County.
"We will also have additional officers on patrol during the night, specifically seeking drunk drivers, so it will be much smarter to arrange your own designated driver or to take advantage of Sober Ride. If you drink and drive you will spend the New Year in jail," said Sheriff Joe Guy.
Anyone interested in using the service can call (423) 745-5613.
