KNOXVILLE (WATE) – Construction will begin later this month on a new retail facility that will include a Walmart and Publix store.

Construction crews will begin working soon at the site near the intersection of Volunteer Boulevard and Kingston Pike.

The location is being touted as the first vertical retail structure in Knoxville.

"It's a much more urban look than what we've seen," said Knoxville Director of Redevelopment Bob Whetsel.

The complex will have parking in the lower level, a Walmart and Publix in the upper level, and several other stores on both levels.

As an added attraction, the boarding station for the popular excursion train, Three Rivers Rambler, will be relocated to the front of the complex.

The hope is the building will bring more than just additional shopping options to the area.

"We'll continue to attract residents into the downtown area, continue to bring residents to the University of Tennessee area," Whetsel said.

Publix and Walmart have signed 20 year leases. The shopping center is expected to open in 2014.
