SWEETWATER (WATE) - A driver was arrested in Sweetwater last week for drunk driving, bringing his number of DUI arrests to seven.

On Jan. 3, officers noticed Albert McCowan, 51, of Niota, waiting to turn onto Oakland Road from Cedar Valley Road with his vehicle on the wrong side of the road.

McCowan's vehicle then turned onto Oakland Road, again in the wrong lane of traffic before correcting to the other lane.

The officer followed the vehicle and noticed it stop at a red light in the left turn lane. When the light turned green, the vehicle remained in place for 20-30 seconds.

The vehicle then made a quick turn, again into the wrong lane of Highway 11.

At this point, the officer pulled the vehicle over and saw McCowan attempting to climb into the backseat from the driver's seat.

Two other passengers were in the car.

The officer told him to remain in place and asked for identification. McCowan got out of the car to search through his wallet and the officer said he almost fell on her.

She was able to lean him against the car, though he was unstable on his feet.

Another officer described the driver as glassy-eyed and smelling of alcohol.

McCowan was then placed in the officer's car for his own safety and arrested.

A passenger in the car drove the vehicle and the other passenger home.

McCowan was charged with DUI. His license was already revoked at the time of the incident.

A review of his criminal history revealed he has been charged with DUI six other times since 1992 and has been charged with driving on a revoked license seven times prior.
