KNOXVILLE (WATE) - For years, grocery store chains like Kroger and Food City have offered customers cheaper gas if you shop with them. Now one of the largest gas station chains in the country is doing the same thing.

Pilot debuted a new promotion this week to take a bite into the competition.

"To earn your points, the drinks you can buy is anything in our fountain area," explained Pilot regional manager Danny Fleming.

Fleming says to get cheaper gas at Pilot, all you have to do is buy something first.

"It incorporates our deli, our coffee, our fountain drinks, our cappuccinos, and icy products," said Fleming. "Every time you buy a cup from us, you get three cents off a gallon at the pumps."

Customers will have to sign up for a free rewards card to keep track of points earned by the purchases.

The promotion started Tuesday and is only being offered in Tennessee right now, but customers can still use points gathered in Tennessee at any Pilot location in the country.

Customers we spoke with like the idea of saving money on fuel.

"It feels great, especially how things are nowadays," said Pilot customer David Worley.

"It's been a tremendous roll out for us," said Fleming. "We have over 200,000 reward card members to this point. In the last couple of days we've gained 6,000 in just two days."

This is the first time they have ever offered a promotion to save money on fuel. The promotion is only temporary and ends on March 31.

Pilot has 67 locations in Tennessee alone.
