Woman safe after her West Knoxville house catches fire

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Firefighters worked to extinguish a West Knoxville house blaze on Sunday morning, according to the Knoxville Fire Department.

It happened around 7:45 a.m. on the 100 block of Heron Drive, located off Northshore Drive.

A woman in the house awoke to the smell of smoke, exited her home and called 911.

When crews arrived they were unable to advance charged waterlines into the home because of clutter inside the structure.

An exterior attack was established while several attempts to safely gain entry were unsuccessful.

The fire extended into the attic area and breached the roof.

Ammunition stored in the home began exploding. Firefighters said they were given a slight startle due to the recent Webster, NY incident.

No injuries have been reported at this time. The Red Cross has been contacted to assist the woman.

The KFD said it is important to keep areas around wall receptacles clear of clutter. Also, never allow heavy objects to sit on power cords which can reduce the flow of electricity and cause friction.
