1 woman dies, 2 sent to hospital after wreck in Smokies


CHEROKEE, N.C. (WATE) - One woman died on Tuesday afternoon after a two-vehicle accident involving a National Park Service truck, according to a press release from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

It happened just before 2:10 p.m. on Newfound Gap Road, just north of Collins Creek Picnic Area in North Carolina.

Rangers said a Chrysler SUV traveling southbound collided with a northbound National Park Service pickup truck.

The unidentified 24-year-old woman driving the SUV was pronounced dead at the scene.

Both the driver of the park vehicle and his passenger were transported to the local hospital for assessment.

North Carolina Highway Patrol is leading the accident investigation.
