KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Road crews worked overtime clearing snowy, icy roads as cooler temperatures rolled in Thursday night. Many remained icy Friday morning.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation says interstate bridges and overpasses are forming black ice and are being treated.

When the snow started falling just after 3 p.m. Thursday, the roads soon became a slushy mess. Many drivers were caught stranded in traffic.

"The snow came down really quickly around 3:30, 4. A lot of drivers rushed to go some place so there was a lot of gridlock," said Brad Case.

As the sun began to go down, the snow stopped falling. Dropping temperatures now worried people of black ice on the roadways.

"I'm absolutely concerned it's going to freeze. There's a lot of water on the roads," said Missy Smith.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation has been monitoring the roads and the weather.

TDOT spokesperson Mark Nagi cautioned drivers, saying black ice is a definite possibility. They recommend drivers staying off the roads if they can. If you must drive, proceed with caution.
