KNOXVILLE (WATE) - A firefighter and a 25-year-old autistic man were pulled to safety Friday morning when a Northwest Knoxville house went up in flames.

When firefighters arrived at the home on Deerfield Road shortly after 9:30 a.m. they found four residents had been able to escape, but the autistic man remained inside.

A firefighter found the man in a back bedroom, but before the firefighter could rescue him flames got out of control. The firefighter had to put out a mayday call.

The resident and firefighter were rescued by other firefighters. The two suffered minor burns and smoke inhalation. They were taken to UT Medical Center.

The other residents were uninjured.

The home was severely damaged by the fire.
