Smokies backcountry camping fees begin in February

GATLINBURG (WATE) - Backcountry camping fees are coming to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park next month.

The National Park Service said changes to backcountry reservations and permits will take effect February 13.

A $4 per person per night fee will be charged for use of the park's backcountry campsites and shelters.

Money from the fees will go to creating an online reservation system and adding park staff.

A group called Southern Forest Watch is planning a legal challenge of the fee.

Members of the group plan to pay the fee when it begins and immediately file a lawsuit.
