Red Cross opens shelters ahead of ice storm


KNOXVILLE (WATE) - The East Tennessee branch of the American Red Cross announced Thursday that they will open up multiple shelters across the region for victims of the ice storm that's predicted for Friday.

Shelters will open Friday in Knox, Jefferson, Anderson and Campbell Counties.

In Knox County, a shelter will open at the Red Cross headquarters at 6921 Middlebrook Pike. The shelter will open at 4 a.m.

Two shelters will open in Anderson County - one at First United Methodist Church, 1350 Oak Ridge Turnpike, in Oak Ridge, and another at Anderson High School, 130 Maverick Circle in Clinton.

Both shelters will open at 5 a.m.

In Campbell County, stranded motorists and residents without power have two options. Caryville Elementary School at 120 Cardinal Circle in Caryville will open at 3 a.m. Another will open at Jellico High School at 141 High School Lane in Jellico at the same time.

A shelter will open in Jefferson County at the Jefferson City Community Center at 1247 Tennessee 92 at 6 a.m.

The Red Cross also offered several tips for residents and motorists to stay safe during and after the storm.
