SWEETWATER (WATE) - Family and friends gathered Sunday to remember a Monroe County teen who was killed in a tragic accidental shooting.
Matthew Daniels, 15, died Thursday night. He was a freshman at Sweetwater High School.
It was standing room only in the Sweetwater High School gym Sunday afternoon as students, teachers and families gathered to remember Matthew.
"He was obviously very loved and everybody cared about him. It wasn't surprising, more of something to be thankful for that everyone was willing to come together and cherish his life," said junior Michael Shultz.
"To lose somebody younger than me, that's just a kid. We're all just kids here," Shultz said.
The crowd wrote down their condolences and favorite memories for Matthew's family to keep.
"We weren't in school Friday and we felt like we needed to give an opportunity for our students, especially our freshmen, to come together and be together before the start of school on Monday," said principal David Watts.
He said counselors will be available at the school Monday for anyone who wants to talk.
"It's pretty obvious this community is hurting. There's going to be a lot of people who miss Matthew. He was a very popular young man and a great kid," Watts said.
Receiving of Friends will be Monday at the First Baptist Church in Sweetwater from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The funeral is set for Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the church.
The school has set up a fund to help the family pay for funeral expenses. Donations can be sent to:
