Former Memphis officer sentenced to 7 years

MEMPHIS (AP) - Federal prosecutors say a former Memphis police officer has been sentenced to seven years in prison for buying drugs while on duty.

Melvin Robinson was sentenced Friday after pleading guilty last July to possessing cocaine with the intent to distribute. He was 1 of more than 20 Memphis officers who were hit with misconduct-related charges last year.

Prosecutors said Robinson was in his police car in January 2012 when he met with an informant. The informant gave Robinson a key to a trailer and told him cocaine was stored there.

FBI agents saw Robinson enter the trailer, remove a duffel bag containing what Robinson thought was cocaine, and place the bag in his car.

Robinson also had pleaded guilty to stealing from one suspect and punching another in the face.
