MAYNARDVILLE (WATE) - A man is in the hospital and two Maynardville police officers are on administrative leave after they exchanged gunfire early Sunday morning.

Maynardville Police Chief Brian Smith says the officers were called to the 100 block of Summerset Way on the report of a domestic dispute.

When they arrived, the officers say, Mark Smith fired shots at them and they returned fire.

"The officer was defending himself. He was fired at, so he returned fire," Chief Smith explained.

The suspect was shot in the shoulder during the gunfire. He was transported to UT Medical Center where he is in stable condition.

The officers were placed on administrative leave with pay as is standard procedure while an investigation is underway.

None of the officers were injured, but police said one was taken to a hospital to be checked out.

Chief Smith says Sunday was not the first time officers have been called to the home on Sommerset Way on the report of a domestic fight.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation will turn the case file over to the district attorney for review when the investigation is complete.
