Gun-related assaults increase in Memphis

MEMPHIS (AP) - Police statistics in Memphis show there was an increase last year in the number of gun-related assaults in the city among teens and young adults.

The Commercial Appeal cited the statistics in reporting that 1,126 people ages 14-24 were victims in 2012 of aggravated assaults related to guns, which adds up to an average of 3 per day.

Data shows the total number of assaults in that age group increased by 8 percent from 2011, but was still down from a high was 1,317 reached in 2009.

Police said the statistics also showed that officers identified 898 suspects in the same age range for firearms-related aggravated assaults.

The city is working on the problem through a variety of means including grant money that is being used to launch initiatives against youth gun violence.
