OAK RIDGE (WATE) - The Oak Ridge police chief is being credited with tackling a 250-pound suspect and taking him into custody.

A department spokesperson says the arrest came shortly after a speeding Ford Explorer nearly hit Chief James Akagi's unmarked car just after 5 p.m. Monday.

The chief had to swerve to avoid being hit.

When Chief Akagi attempted to stop the SUV the driver sped off and a brief high speed chase began.

The driver, Landon Thomas, 26, and a passenger, Justin Harris, 22, eventually bailed out of the SUV and took off running.

The chief tackled Harris. Other police officers stopped Thomas and took him into custody.

Both men are now facing a variety of charges, including resisting arrest.
