KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Knoxville Area Transit is proposing an overhaul of their current bus routes, which would make bus service more frequent on some of the busiest routes.

KAT is looking to either double the current service during rush hour or improve service for 15 routes.

The most heavily used routes include Kingston Pike, Magnolia, Broadway and Chapman Highway. These routes would have bus service every 15 minutes instead of every 30 minutes, if the proposal is approved.

"More buses are needed, simply put," KAT rider Doug Hampton said.

KAT said it serves more than three million passengers a year and said the number is growing.

"Since we opened Knoxville station in August 2010, every single month has seen an increase in ridership over the previous year's month," KAT Director of Marketing Belinda Woodiel-Brill said. "We have been climbing."

KAT held the first of three open houses Thursday to get some feedback from riders about what changes they feel are necessary.

South Knoxville resident Kenneth Williams said he would like to see more evening service on the south side of Chapman Highway.

"A later schedule on the bus for out there, because a lot of people still be coming out there," Williams said. "It gets real crowded. It's standing room only at times."

KAT also wants to redesign the bus route connected to Chapman Highway at Young High Pike.

The Knoxville Transportation Authority still needs to vote on the proposal during a meeting Feb. 28.

If KTA approves it, the changes will take effect in June.
