Lawmakers proposes moratorium on new body farms

NASHVILLE (WATE) - One state lawmaker wants to put a hold on new body farms.

State Sen. Frank Niceley is proposing a moratorium on the use of land to study human decomposition until the state can come up with rules and regulations.

The moratorium wouldn't apply to the University of Tennessee's long-standing Forensic Anthropology Center, dubbed the body farm.

But it would block Carson-Newman University's plans to create a similar site in New Market.

Those plans were announced in October.

Last month, a neighbor of the proposed site is suing the Jefferson County Zoning Board, which gave approval to the project.
