KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Construction of a much-anticipated elementary school is on track and scheduled to be open in time for the start of the 2013-2014 school year.

The school is being built on Thunderhead Road by the Northshore Town Center.

When the school opens for class in August it will have cost nearly $20 million and taken 18 months to build.

The construction cost and length of time are what Knox County Schools Supervisor of Facilities and Construction Douglas Dillingham expected. He says the building is almost 70 percent complete.

"If you go inside you'll see a lot of paint on the walls and ceiling grid going in, getting ready to put the finishing touches on the ceiling," said Dillingham.

The building will be 127,000 square feet and have space for 1,200 students.

An estimated 967 students will attend the school when it opens in August, allowing for additional growth.

Rezoning maps show the new school will help other schools achieve their target student capacity.

The new school will have wireless technology, interactive boards, a media center, and a security system.

"When the bell rings exterior doors are locked. Anyone coming into the building comes in through the front doors into a vestibule, then they have to go through the reception area in order to access the remainder of the school," said Dillingham.

Dillingham explained the building is designed for safety. Nooks and crannies inside the building are avoided. The principal's office will have a view of the front door and parking lot and the building will be secure but open after hours.

"It's actually designed so the school can be secured and open to the public after hours for use of the gym and cafeteria areas while securing the remainder of the building," said Dillingham.
