Labor officials hold meetings for Oak Ridge nuclear workers

OAK RIDGE (AP) - The U.S. Department of Labor is holding town hall meetings in Oak Ridge to explain medical benefits associated with the government's compensation program for sick nuclear workers.

The Oak Ridger reports that the meetings will be Wednesday at the New Hope Center near the entrance to the Y-12 National Security Complex.

The Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program Act was passed by Congress in 2000 and provides financial compensation and medical benefits to employees who became ill as a result of working in the nuclear weapons industry.

Workers who were at the national laboratory between 1943 and 1955 and later developed cancer are eligible for compensation.

The Labor Department said the topics will include home health care services, the Privacy Act and filing claims.
