NEWPORT (WATE) - Two first graders got a special surprise at Centerview Elementary Friday.

The twins thought they had a chance at winning a prize for a President's Day celebration, but what they got instead was a surprise visit from their dad.

Petty Officer Matthew Johnson had been deployed in Germany for the past four months.

Joseph and Jesse Johnson were busy learning Friday morning, not knowing their dad was right outside.

"I'm expecting them to be a little bashful, a little excited, a little bit of everything. Probably all those emotions," Petty Officer Johnson said.

The boys thought they had won the contest, but the prize wasn't really the balloons.

It was their dad.

Joseph and Jesse will only get to spend the weekend with their dad, since he is stationed in Virginia.

They have a lot of catching up to do, and Johnson is excited to hear every detail.

"I've missed quite a bit the last couple of years. It's just nice to hear what's going on and spend time with them. Missing them grow up," Johnson explained.

Now that dad's back, Jesse and Joseph are planning their careers. They say they want to be like their dad and work with him someday.

He says they have to go to college first.

But before all that, they're taking a trip to the water park.

They'll get to see each other again in a few weeks for spring break.

This was Johnson's seventh deployment.

He is expected to be deployed again in December.
