KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Democrat Brian Stevens has dropped out of a race that would pit him against Sen. Stacey Campfield in the 2014 election.

Stevens announced the decision on his Facebook page on Friday, saying he had come to the conclusion after several months of consideration.

The candidate endorsed Commissioner Richard Briggs, who recently announced his intention to run against Campfield in the Republican primary.

Stevens called Briggs, "a kind man who treats everyone with respect," and said he was committed to making sure Campfield was not reelected.

Stevens also said anyone who donated to his campaign can request a refund.
