KNOXVILLE (WATE) - There weren't many drivers lining up at the pump after gas spiked more than 10 cents during the Monday morning commute alone.
The average price per gallon in Knoxville was hovering just below $3.60, but for some drivers that price is a relief.
Elizabeth Welke is traveling to Florida from Michigan, where the pain at the pump has been much worse.
"When we left Coldwater it was $3.89 a gallon," said Welke. "Ohio was $3.85. So for us, it's nice to see a little bit lower gas prices as we head south."
Experts blame the jump on an increase in crude oil prices and production cuts. They fear it could continue to climb as refineries close for maintenance to switch to the summer fuel blend.
"I expect it to be over $4 and that's really unfortunate with having to commute back and forth to work quite a distance," said Welke.
There are some things you can do to help improve your cars mileage:
- Obey the speed limit
- Make sure your gas cap is on tight
- Make sure your tires are properly inflated
- Buy gas during the coolest time of the day
- Don't top off your tank
- Get rid of unnecessary excess weight in your trunk
Also, if your gas station has a fuel rewards program you aren't taking advantage of, you may want to start.
"You definitely have to cut back on some of your extra travel trips and consolidate a few and think twice before you go a little further for any things you may be able to get locally," said Welke.
