KNOXVILLE (WATE) – It has been 16 years since a Knoxville man was found shot and burned at his home in Fountain City.

Police say Scott Dyer, 33, was known to go out and party. In fact, investigators say he was last seen with two women he met at a club that night. Police have never been able to identify the ladies.

The case was originally reported as a fire on April 25,1997. Dyer's charred body was later found inside his house.

"Whoever shot him probably lit the fire to cover their tracks," said Knoxville Police Department Cold Case Investigator Jeff Day.

Those who knew Scott say he was a popular guy.

"Scott was very outgoing. He was fun-loving, quick-witted, and generous to a fault," said Michelle Griffith, Dyer's ex-wife.

At the time of the murder, Griffith was divorced from Dyer, but the two had a good relationship, raising their young son together.

"I had a seven-year-old child at home. How do you tell a seven-year-old their father died? And the manner that he died; I tried to keep that from him because I didn't think his little mind could take that. I didn't want him to think about that," Griffith said.

Investigators and the ex-wife say Dyer was a man who liked to party and pick up girls.

"Scott liked to go out. That was the reason our marriage fell apart. He liked to get out and drink and carry on," Michelle explained.

"That night he was alone and he met a couple girls that night," Day said.

Investigator Day says police have sketches of what the women look like, but no one has come forward recognizing the ladies.

They believe something happened between Scott and the two women. Neighbors heard gunshots, and right after that Dyer's house was called in on fire.

"We're assuming robbery was the motive, but we're still not sure," Griffith said.

The real story of what happened to Scott Dyer that night remains a mystery.

"I want someone to go to jail for taking my son's father away," Griffith said.
