ROGERSVILLE (WATE) - Drug interdiction operations on Highway 11 ended with a pursuit and felony drug arrest early Thursday morning, according to Sheriff Ronnie Lawson of the Hawkins County Sheriff's Office.

A narcotics officer saw a 2000 Red Honda Accord traveling eastbound on the highway with only one functioning headlight.

A traffic stop was then attempted on the vehicle, but the driver accelerated and began to evade.

Traffic volume on Highway 11 was light since it was only 2 a.m., and the pursuit was initiated without placing innocent motorists in danger.

The vehicle continued to ignore blue lights and sirens and fled eastbound for approximately four miles, at which time officers noticed the suspect vehicle began to gradually slow down from what appeared to be engine problems.

After another mile, an engine failure forced the driver to stop in the median near the intersection of Surgoinsville Creek Road.

The driver, David Edward Schreck, 24, of Johnson City, was then removed from the vehicle without any further incident.

Officers detected a strong odor of marijuana in Schreck's vehicle, and the suspect said he did have marijuana inside of a red backpack.

Inside of the red backpack, officers recovered a bag of marijuana, plastic baggies, and scales, which are consistent with the resell of marijuana.  Officers also recovered a small amount of Clonazepam, which is a controlled substance, and Schreck did not have a prescription for it.

Officers also recovered $370 in cash, which is believed to proceeds from illegal drug sales.

Schreck's vehicle and the cash were seized. He was processed into the Hawkins County Jail.  His bond is $75,000, and he has a February 27 court date.

His charges include: possession of marijuana with intent to deliver, possession of a Schedule IV controlled substance, felony evading arrest, possession of drug paraphernalia and violation of light law.
