KNOXVILLE (WATE) - A trial date has been set for the retrial of Christian-Newsom defendant George Thomas.
Thomas is one of four charged in the torture, rape and murder of Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom.
In his first trial, Thomas was sentenced to life in prison for his role in the crimes.
That ruling was thrown out after it was found that the presiding judge Richard Baumgartner was abusing prescription pills during the trial.
In January, Judge Walter Kurtz granted Thomas a new trial, ruling that he could not sit as a thirteenth juror because he couldn't see and hear the witnesses who linked Thomas to the murders in the initial trial.
On Wednesday, the start date for his retrial was set for May 13 in District 1 court. Pretrial motions will take place on March 25.
Knox County Assistant District Attorney Leland Price told 6News that the jury for the retrial, like the jury that sat in on the retrial of Vanessa Coleman, will be selected from outside of Knox County.
