Vols hire new running backs coach

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Just days after the sudden departure of Jay Graham, the Tennessee football team has hired a new running backs coach.

Robert Gillespie, a former Florida running back and most recently an assistant coach at West Virginia joins the Vols.

The hire was announced by Tennessee head coach Butch Jones via Twitter on Friday night.

"We are very excited to welcome Robert and his family into the Tennessee family," Jones said in a statement.

"Coach Gillespie brings a vast knowledge of the SEC, having been a part of it both as a player and as a coach. Robert is a high-energy coach who will get the most out of his players, and he also has a great reputation in the coaching profession as a relentless recruiter."

Gillespie coached running backs at West Virginia from 2011-12.

He has also been a running backs coach at Oklahoma State (2009-10) and South Carolina (2006-08).

Gillespie played at Florida from 1998-2001.

Graham, a former Tennessee player, announced on Monday that he was leaving UT for a coaching position at Florida State.

Graham joined the Tennessee staff in 2012.
