Sheriff raises concern over location of new jail

MADISONVILLE (WATE) - The Monroe County Sheriff is expressing his concerns about the future of the county jail.

The state has ordered the county to build a larger jail because of overcrowding.

Plans for a new jail are being developed. The jail could stay in downtown Madisonville or be moved elsewhere. The commission plans to decide on the future location in April.

Sheriff Bill Bivens says there could be dire results if action isn't taken soon. "A failure to move forward by the commission to appease the state will most likely result in the decertification of the Monroe County jail." Sheriff Bivens went on to say the jail could lose certification due to the jail's old age and overcrowding.
