GATLINBURG (WATE) - A group has officially filed a lawsuit against the National Park Service and other park officials in opposition to a backcountry fee.
The $4 fee is required for any park visitor wishing to camp in the backcountry areas of the park overnight.
The fee took effect on Feb. 13.
Now, the Southern Forest Watch, which has been threatening to file suit for some time, has officially done so, claiming the fee was put into place despite significant public protest and that it will "restrict and impair use of the Smoky Mountain backcountry."
The lawsuit, which was filed Saturday in Knoxville in District Court, asks the court to void the fee.
