KNOXVILLE (WATE) - MEDIC Regional Blood Bank is issuing an emergency request for donors with blood type O negative.
The blood bank said Monday the community blood center could not fulfill hospital orders for the blood type.
Medical providers use O negative, known as the "universal donor" blood type, when treating patients of unknown blood type.
The bank said all blood types are needed, but there is a critical shortage of this particular type.
