GRAY, Ky. (WATE/AP) - Seven people died in a house fire in Knox County, Ky. on Saturday, according to the Kentucky State Police.
Officials said they received a call just before 10 a.m. about the house located in the Gray community. Firefighters stayed on the scene until the fire was out at 1 p.m.
Investigators say they found the bodies of five children and two adults, a woman and her boyfriend, inside the home.
All were found in the living room. One child was less than a foot from a door leading out of the house.
Police say the woman was the mother of three of the children. The two other children were from another family.
"It was a very hard incident to deal with, especially with the loss of life that's involved," said Sgt. Jimmy Young of the Kentucky State Police. "It's probably one of the more severe ones that I have seen."
"It's just a tragedy. I feel sorry for them. They're in my prayers," said Jacob Garrison, who made the 911 call.
Family members say the uncle of 1 of the victims desperately tried to save them from the burning home.
Laura Cima said Sunday that her husband, Gino, raced to the house Saturday when he heard about the fire, but was too late to save the two adults and five children inside.
Laura Cima said the bodies of the two adults were found just inside a side door, and Gino dragged them out while yelling, "There's babies in there!" to firefighters outside.
Officials have not identified the victims, but family members say the five children killed ranged in age from 10 months to 3 years. They also say the woman killed was three months pregnant.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Foul play is not suspected.
