Bill to change beer tax advances in state legislature

NASHVILLE (WATE) - A measure to change Tennessee's beer tax advanced in the state legislature on Wednesday.

The bill passed a House Local Government subcommittee vote that would change the tax from being based on the value of the beer sold to the volume of beer.

Sponsor Rep. Cameron Sexton of Crossville says it encourages buyers to cross state lines, as Tennessee has the highest tax on beer.

Sexton also said the current system hurts the state's growing craft beer industry.

Supporters held a rally backing the bill last month in Knoxville's Old City.
