KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Area health inspectors gave two local restaurants failing grades this week.

Both of the low scoring restaurants had hygiene and sanitation issues, violations that health inspectors are giving close attention.

Lowest Score:

Tin Roof, 7428 Northshore Drive - Grade: 68

A grade below 70 is considered unsanitary by the health department.

At the Tin Roof, the inspector writes food was being prepared on an unsanded plywood table that had no cover on it. You can't do that.

Also, a kitchen hand sink was being used for storage, but hand sinks are to be used for hand washing only.

The inspector found a food slicer had not been sanitized. Also, dishes running through the dishwasher were not being properly sanitized.

We've seen this violation before - a food worker had painted fingernails.

The fingernail polish likely made a nice appearance, but painted nails aren't allowed because you can't see what is under the nails.

The Tin Roof has since been reinspected. The new score is an 81.

Other low scores:

P.F. Chang's, 6741 Kingston Pike - Grade: 69

Here, the inspector writes a meat grinder had not been sanitized and some kitchen equipment was dirty.

Also, the temperature of shrimp and chicken was at 46 degrees, but 41 and below is required.

Finally, the cook handled raw chicken, which is filled with bacteria, and then touched clean plates without first washing his hands

P.F. Chang's has also been reinspected. The new grade is a 92. That's good.

The top grades this week include two near-perfect scores.

  • The Casual Pint, 234 Brookview Center Way - Grade: 99
  • Ruggles Ferry Golf Club Snack Bar, Ruggles Ferry Pike - Grade: 99
  • Subway, West Town Mall - Grade: 96
  • Javerde, West Town Mall - Grade: 94
  • Cracker Barrel, 716 Campbell Station Road - Grade: 94
  • Long John Silvers, 2816 Magnolia Avenue - Grade: 92
  • Shoney's, 8529 Kingston Pike - Grade: 91
  • Ruby Tuesday, 6606 Clinton Hwy - Grade: 90

Health inspections provide a snapshot of conditions at a restaurant at the time of the inspection.

They're unannounced and conducted every six months.
