Fire in high-rise apartment complex sends resident to the hospital

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - One person was taken to the hospital after a high-rise apartment complex filled with smoke.

At about 6:20 Thursday evening, firefighters were dispatched to the Westview Tower Apartments on Gleason Dr. When they arrived, they found a sprinkler on the 11th floor had been activated.

Firefighters say the hallway on that floor was filled with smoke. Crews were able to contain the fire. The cause is under investigation.

One resident from a neighboring unit was taken to the hospital with mild non-life threatening smoke inhalation symptoms.

Police were also called to detain a resident who wanted to help firefighters "a little too much."

Officials say because the sprinkler went off, several units have been damaged due to excessive amounts of water. Maintenance crews are evaluating the damage.
