Today’s forecast is just about “picture perfect”. We will see plenty of sunshine, light wind, low relative humidity values and highs right about where we should be for this time of year, so please enjoy it! The area of high pressure giving us this nice day will slowly drift eastward on Monday, but we should still see a lot of sunshine and temperatures in the low-mid 70s. It doesn’t last though as a cold front pushes into the area on Tuesday producing widespread showers and even a few thunder...More >>

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Budget was the topic of conversation at a meeting of Knox County school leaders Monday night and their 2014 budget proposal calls for school resource officers in every school and raises for teachers.

With those items and more up for discussion, Superintendent Dr. Jim McIntyre's proposal calls for an additional $13 million, up more than 3 percent.

The superintendent says the increase to the budget is needed for four main reasons. First, the money will pay for a 2.5 percent increase for teachers. Dr. McIntyre says this increase is needed to retain and attract top teachers to Knox County.

Also, almost $2 million will go toward adding 58 additional school resource officers at each school.

The increase in the budget would also go toward maintenance and operating costs for new technology and additional school security resources at every school. Dr. McIntyre wants each school to have new security video cameras and building entry controls.

"After the Sandy Hook tragedy, there's a real heightened expectation about safety and security in our schools and we want to make sure we are doing everything in our power to keep our kids safe and our school secure and the three things I outlined are important in doing that," said Dr. McIntyre.

A community forum on the budget will be held Thursday, March 21 at 6 p.m. at Northwest Middle School.

The school board will vote on the budget on April 9.
