CROSSVILLE (WATE) - Residents in Cumberland County now have a new place for their health care needs.

An open house for the new Cumberland County Health Department Community Health Center was held Wednesday. The center is located on 1503 South Main Street in Crossville.

Cumberland County Public Health Director Karen Roper gave 6 News a tour of their new building, which is double the size of their old location.

"We had been in our old building for 45 years, and it was overcrowded," said Roper.

The facility opened in January after more than a year of construction.

The new health department was paid for by a $4.5 million grant. County officials gave approximately $1 million to the project, which included the purchase of the land.

The new center will provide primary and dental care. It will also have a wing specifically for new mothers and children.

"It's wonderful," said Roper. "Its really great. We are so thankful for the opportunity to be in a building this nice."

The grant also required that the building be energy efficient.

"We have the geothermal heating system, where we bring in fresh air and it reduces the cost," explained Roper.

Each year the number of people who use the health department grows. Currently, they have more than 29,000 patient visits annually.

They now have the room to help even more.

Roper says 76% of the people who visit their health department are uninsured.
