KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Local students helped out to make the community a bit greener on Friday.
First graders from Lonsdale Elementary School teamed up with the city of Knoxville's urban forester Kasey Krouse to plant a cherry tree outside their school.
The event was planned to help educate the students on the importance of trees.
"As far as our goals with the city and promoting a healthy urban forest, I think it's great to get involved with the young people at an early age because they're going to be the ones responsible in the future for taking care of our environment and our urban forest," said Krouse.
Students also planted four oak trees earlier this year at a park adjacent to the school.
