KNOXVILLE (WATE) - A Knoxville man awoke Monday morning to find his house filled with smoke. He was able to escape without injury, but his home was badly damaged by fire.

Knoxville firefighters were called to 717 E. Oldham Ave. at 7 a.m. When they arrived the resident was already safely out of his house.

Firefighters say the man told them he had first smelled smoke around 3:00 a.m., but went back to bed. It wasn't until he awoke again at 7:00 that he realized his house was on fire and he called 911.

The fire started between walls of a back bedroom and had extended into the attic by the time firefighters arrived.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
