KINGSTON (WATE) - The man wanted in the 2011 death of a 23-year-old Knoxville woman was released from jail Tuesday.

Shawn Smoot was released Tuesday morning after posting a $250,000 bond.

Smoot is the main suspect in the death of his ex-girlfriend, Brooke Nicole Morris, whose body was found by a Roane County road in October of 2011. She had been shot to death.

Prior to her death, Morris took out an order of protection against Smoot. In that order, she said her relationship with him had turned violent and that he had choked her, leaving bruises on her neck.

Investigators also said Morris and Smoot exchanged text messages on the day she died.

After Smoot was indicted in the case, he was ordered to turn himself in, but instead fled the area. He was later arrested in Mississippi, an area where he grew up, and extradited back to Roane County.

On Tuesday, Smoot was released from jail until his court date on the condition that he stay in Tennessee, maintain good behavior, check in with probations officers twice monthly and have no contact with Morris' family.

He is scheduled to be in court June 17.
