Former UT football captain arrested on drug charges

SCOTTSBORO, Ala. (WATE) - Former Tennessee football player Eric Westmoreland was arrested on drug charges on Wednesday.

The Jackson County (Ala.) Sheriff's Office said Deputy Travis Renfro stopped a vehicle on Alabama Highway 27 for a traffic violation.

Renfro called for a narcotics investigator and drug K-9 unit.

The sheriff's office said upon searching the vehicle, deputies located a seized the following controlled and prescription medication: Oxycodone, Phendimetrazine and Acyclovir. 

Westmoreland, 36, who is listed from Chattanooga, was charged with unlawful possession of controlled substances and released on $3,500 bond.

In addition to Westmoreland, four others were arrested and face various charges.

Westmoreland played for Tennessee from 1996-2000. He was a member of the Vols 1998 National Championship team and was listed as team captain in his senior year at UT.

He is originally from Jasper, Tenn. and played high school football at Marion County.
