Former deputies tried on civil rights charges

NASHVILLE (AP) - Two former Humphreys County sheriff's deputies are being tried on federal civil rights charges, accused of beating of a man they arrested.

James Benjamin "Benji" Lee and Timothy Wayne Hedge are being tried in U.S. District Court in Nashville, accused of violating the rights of Darrin Ring in 2011.

According to The Tennessean, witness Ira Travis testified Wednesday, telling the court every time Ring said something, the officers hit him.

Police dash camera video showed officers putting Ring on the ground. He ended up naked in the snow and had injuries that included broken ribs, a punctured lung and a broken shoulder. He was pepper sprayed, shocked with a stun device and struck with a metal baton.
