KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Two men were shot outside of an East Knoxville apartment complex on Saturday night.

The Knoxville Police Department said officers were on patrol in the area of Austin Homes Apartments near Bell Street around 9 p.m. when they heard 15 to 20 gun shots.

Officers drove toward the sound of the gunfire and found a dark vehicle with a New Jersey license plate.

Police attempted a traffic stop, but the suspect vehicle increased its speed and drove in the wrong lane on Cherry Street.  Authorities then made the decision to stop following the car.

Additional officers went to the original scene on Bell Street and found two males who had been shot.

According to witnesses, there may have been an argument at the top of Bell Street. A dark colored vehicle drove down South Bell Street, toward McCalla Avenue and fired shots out of its passenger side.

The two victims were struck as they stood outside an apartment.  Officers do not believe they were involved in the initial dispute.

One male had a gun shot wound in his back. The other had a wound on his head. Both males were able to talk when police arrived.

Police are still investigating, and no other details have been released at this time.
