Knoxville ranked second worst city for allergies

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Knoxville is yet again in the top five worst cities for springtime allergies.

Knoxville is second only to Jackson, Miss., according to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation's yearly ranking.

Chattanooga ranks third and Memphis is eighth.

The report looks at the number of board-certified allergists in a city, the number of allergy medications used and the number of pollen spores in the area.

"We have extraordinarily high pollen levels here, we have a lot of seasonal changes and barometric pressure changes, we have high mold counts here in general," said allergy specialist Dr. Ty Prince. "The combination of that and the pollution that we have here makes it a bad city to live in."

Local doctors say this area is also bad for asthma sufferers.

The new allergy report also predicts people who normally have mild spring allergies will see worsening symptoms this year.
