Organizers gear up for the Knoxville Marathon

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Organizers are getting ready for one of the city's largest events of the spring.

The 2013 Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon is this coming Sunday, but pre-race activities begin as early as Saturday.

More than 6,000 runners from all over the world are expected to attend.

And this year, race organizers have added a new event - the two-person relay.

"That gives someone who wants to do the half marathon distance the opportunity to partner up with somebody else and choose if they want to do the first half of the course or the second half. The feedback on that has been good because people love some of the neighborhoods on the second half including Island Home, Fourth and Gill and Parkridge," said Marathon Director Jason Altman.

Race officials say they expect people from 48 states and as many as seven foreign countries to come to East Tennessee to run in the Knoxville Marathon.

Online registration has ended. The only opportunity left to register is this Saturday at the Marathon Health and Fitness Expo.

That's being held at the Knoxville Convention and Exposition Center inside the downtown Holiday Inn.
