MARYVILLE (WATE) - Residents of a Maryville apartment complex were looking for temporary homes Wednesday evening after the city evacuated the units for possible water contamination.

The residents of the 36 apartments at Foothills Crossing on Whitecrest Drive were asked to leave Wednesday after a city inspection on Tuesday.

During that inspection, city water officials found evidence that surface water had contaminated the complex's water source and said it was likely that wastewater had also contaminated the water supply.

Because of the health risk, city officials were forced to evacuate the residents.

Maryville Public Utility Director Baron Swafford said the contamination affected not only the water at the complex, but the city's water system.

"We had to cut off water to the complex until the owner can install a backflow preventer and make some repairs to their private sewer line," Swafford said in a news release.

The apartment owner is responsible for hiring a contractor to do the work. City officials said they estimated the work would take two days to complete.

The Red Cross was assisting residents with alternate housing in the meantime.
