DANDRIDGE (WATE) - A proposal to locate an industrial megasite in Jefferson County has fallen apart.

The Jefferson County Economic Development Oversight Committee (EDOC) said Thursday that they were scrapping the project because of resistance from property owners.

The group said it only wanted to move forward with the project as long as it had the voluntary consent of property owners.

"While EDOC firmly believes that the megasite is a viable option for economic progress in Jefferson County, it is clear that getting 100 percent of the property owners to agree on options for land would be a long and uncertain process," said EDOC Chairman and Dandridge Mayor George Gantte said in a news release.

Residents came out against the megasite in January, but the Jefferson County Commission nevertheless voted to approve the plan in February.

The options to purchase property for the project have been released.

The EDOC is also recommending that funding paid out for the site to the industrial development board by the county commission be given back to the commission.
