BARBOURVILLE, KY (WATE) - Police are looking for a man who robbed a tobacco store at gunpoint.

It happened around 9:30 Tuesday night at the Tobacco Hut on US Highway 25E in Barbourville, Ky.

Police say what's unusual about this robbery is the speed at which it happened.

It only took seconds: the robber arrived on foot, took the money and was gone.

"It was a very short time frame, just a few seconds that it took for the entire robbery to be accomplished," explained Barbourville Police Detective Steve Owens.

The entire robbery was all caught on tape.

"When the clerk approached the window, opened the window, he aimed the gun in the clerk's face, ordered her to provide him with all the money in the cash register," Det. Owens added.

Police are using the video to track down the suspect, a white male wearing a black hoodie who fled the scene once he got the money.

"Right now, we're still hashing out leads. We do have the potential involvement of a dark-colored Chevrolet Trail Blazer that we are working on, as well as using the video and the still images to identify the suspect as well," Det. Owens said.

The clerk inside the store was not injured during the robbery.

"Due to the nature of it and his demeanor, as he was at the window, we feel that it was fortunate that nothing did happen, whether intentionally or accidentally," said Det. Owens.

Police say the suspect is likely someone local.

"We think it would be very likely that drugs in some manner are involved. It appears, the possibility is, that he may have been intoxicated at the time that the robbery occurred. Even if not that, a vast majority of the crimes we investigate are drug related," Det. Owens added.

6 News spoke with the owner of the Tobacco Hut. He declined to go on camera but did said he had already been looking into beefing up security at his store.

Barbourville police were still looking for the suspect Wednesday night.

Anyone with information was asked to call the Barbourville Police Department at (606) 546-3441.
