Knoxville man hit by car while saving girl from accident

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - A Knoxville man saved a six-year-old girl from being hit by a car, but was unable to save himself from the impact.

Elijah Clark, 32, told police he was helping seven kids cross Hall of Fame Drive to go to the Cal Johnson Recreation Center for after-school activities.

Clark said he saw a car approaching that appeared to be driving very quickly as the children were still crossing. A six-year-old girl was in the middle of the street.

Clark grabbed the girl and threw her onto a bank to avoid being hit, but was struck by the Ford Focus, driven by Evelyn Crawford, 87.

Clark suffered an injury to his arm and was taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center.

The girl was not injured.

Crawford was cited for failure to yield right of way in a marked pedestrian crossing.
