OAK RIDGE (WATE) - Funeral arrangements and new details were announced Thursday about the death of a soldier from Oak Ridge killed in Afghanistan.

Staff Sgt. Christopher Ward, 24, an Oak Ridge High School graduate, died over the weekend.

State officials said Thursday that Ward was killed when his patrol was struck by a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device in Kandahar.

His body arrived at Dover Air Force Base earlier this week.

On Friday, his body will be brought to McGhee Tyson Air National Guard Base.

Visitation for Ward is scheduled for Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon at Weatherford Mortuary in Oak Ridge with services to follow.

The state says Ward will receive the Tennessee Fallen Heroes Medal during that service. He'll also receive the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star.

Gov. Bill Haslam ordered flags lowered to half staff to honor the fallen soldier.
