SouthFest gets underway to boost South Knox businesses

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - A festival intended to encourage people to visit and shop at local businesses south of the river got underway Friday afternoon in South Knoxville.

SouthFest, organized by Knox County Mayor Tim Burchett's office, is an outgrowth of cash mob events that were started when businesses began to struggle following the closure of the Henley Bridge more than two years ago.

South Knoxville has seen less traffic coming in since the bridge was closed for refurbishing.

The festival features food, live music and a car show.

Business owners say they hope SouthFest will encourage people to come back as repeat customers, once they see everything South Knoxville has to offer.

SouthFest continues Saturday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. and will include a performance by Phoenix Stone at 3:15.

For more information and a full schedule of events can be found on the SouthFest website.
